In Waldorf Education, we strive to meet every child where they are. We treat every child as an individual worthy of respect and dignity, and our goal is to help them achieve their highest potential. We also forge an interdependent community of learners in each classroom, who work cooperatively and collaboratively for the success of the whole group.
Our curriculum embraces many different learning modalities and styles (such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile), and our teachers strive to meet the individual learning needs of every student in their class. While the creative and nurturing atmosphere of our classrooms may provide positive social-emotional and artistic experiences for some children with special needs, it is important to understand that we do not have a distinct special education program in place like many public schools offer, and we cannot formally diagnose children who may potentially exhibit signs of having a documentable learning disability.
All of our students learn together in the same general education classroom, with individual academic support provided as needed by the class teacher. If additional academic support outside of school is recommended for a student, we may suggest tutoring, mental health support, or other similar resources. However, we are not equipped to accommodate very significant learning challenges, and we cannot offer certain special education support services, such as speech or occupational therapy, one on one classroom aids, applied behavior analysis, etc.
As with all of our enrollments, we look at each student application on a case-by-case basis to see if we are mutually good fit. Occasionally, we may offer tentative enrollment on a trial basis for some students with special learning needs, depending on the unique situation of each family and class teacher. We are happy to discuss any items you may have concerns about with compassion, understanding, and respect.
